Modern vs. Contemporary Design: Decoding the Styles!

Welcome, design enthusiasts! Today, we embark on an exciting journey to unravel the mystery behind two often-confused design styles: modern and contemporary. While they might sound similar, these styles are distinct in their own right. Join us as we break down the differences so you know what the hell they are talking about on TV.

At a glance:

The main difference between contemporary and modern art and design is that contemporary design is all about trends and the “here and now” while Modern design is simple, decluttered, and shouts “less is more”! Continue reading to learn more and see how you can spot the differences yourself!

Modern Design:

Picture this: clean lines, sleek surfaces, and a touch of minimalism. Modern design emerged during the mid-20th century, embracing the mantra of "form follows function." It champions simplicity, decluttering, and an ode to futuristic elements. Think of the iconic phrase "less is more" as the guiding principle. With modern design, you're on a date with sharp angles, open spaces, and a timeless elegance that makes every piece of furniture feel like a sculpture.

It is no wonder a lot of people are drawn to this minimalistic and calming genre of home decor.
Check out this project designed by Vertical Interior Design Studio located in Chicago! This firehouse turned residential is a great example of minimalistic and simple modern design! It is common here in Chicago that old firehouses become too small to house the newer and larger trucks. Therefore, these beautiful antique buildings are rehabbed into more functional spaces! (Fun fact: My husband and I were married at a rehabbed Chicago Firehouse turned venue. Oddly enough we found out my grandpa even worked there at one point as a fireman back in the 70s!)

Contemporary Design:

Hold onto your hats, folks, because contemporary design is a bit of a shape-shifter! Unlike modern design, contemporary style is all about the "here and now." It's like your cool, trendsetting friend who always keeps up with the latest fashion. Contemporary design borrows from various eras and freely mixes elements, creating an eclectic fusion of styles. You'll find it is a kaleidoscope of colors, textures, and shapes, celebrating individuality and embracing what's cutting-edge in the design world.

I personally LOVE what is currently Contemporary. I am a maximalist at heart and one of my favorite designers in Chicago always hits the nail on the head with this genre. Check out this project done by Studio Sven and just take a moment to drool with me!

Spotting the Differences:

Okay, let's play a little game of "Spot the Difference" between modern and contemporary design:

1. Time Travel: Modern design has its roots firmly planted in the past, specifically the mid-20th century. Contemporary design, on the other hand, lives in the present, adapting and evolving with the times.

2. Rulebook vs. Free Spirit: Modern design adheres to a specific set of principles, while contemporary design thrives on flexibility and embraces the freedom to mix and match styles.

3. Less is More vs. Anything Goes: Modern design cherishes clean lines, minimalism, and simplicity. In contrast, contemporary design welcomes a broader palette of materials, colors, and textures, resulting in a more eclectic and vibrant atmosphere.

4. Timelessness vs. Trendiness: Modern design has a timeless quality that transcends eras, it will never go out of style. While contemporary design embraces the current trends and gives them a unique twist that can easily be combined with other styles.

So, Which Style Is Right for You?

Well, that depends on your personal taste and the vibe you want to create in your space. If you lean towards a sleek and timeless look, modern design might be your soulmate. But if you crave a more adventurous, ever-evolving space that reflects your eclectic personality, contemporary design will be your perfect match.

Remember, design is all about expressing yourself and creating a space that resonates with your unique style and sensibilities. So, whether you choose modern or contemporary, let your imagination run wild and have fun infusing your personal touch!
